Browsers, Destinations and Connections
What this concept is
A URL identifies a destination and resource. In https://learn.example.org/guide?mode=print, https is the scheme, learn.example.org the hostname, /guide the path and mode=print the query. These example domains are for reading, not sites you must visit. A protected connection and a trustworthy claim are separate questions.
Why it matters here
You will download tools and consult unfamiliar documentation. Knowing where a link actually leads is more useful than trusting its visible button label or a familiar logo.
Concrete example
Compare the written addresses https://docs.example.org/start and https://docs.example.org.attacker.invalid/start. Their hostnames differ: the second is not the first site's hostname. A copied logo and the words “official download” do not change that.
For an actual source, navigate to a known project's official documentation, inspect its hostname and follow its own installation link. Record the destination before downloading. No installation is needed for this exercise.
Common confusion / misconception
HTTPS protects the connection to the indicated host; it does not certify that every statement or download is honest. A browser warning is not a challenge to bypass. A local teaching service using HTTP is a different context from submitting credentials to a public site.
How to use it
Read the complete hostname, check the source's own navigation and keep software updates enabled according to device policy. If a download asks you to disable protections unexpectedly, stop and check the official instructions. Learn the destination rather than memorizing one browser's icon shape.
Check yourself
Can a deceptive page have HTTPS? Yes. What additional evidence would help? An independently established official hostname and a consistent path from the project's documentation, while still reviewing the requested action.
Mini drill or application
Annotate the scheme, host and path of two official resource URLs in this module. For each, distinguish “I reached this host” from “this specific claim is supported.” Do not visit invented suspicious destinations.
Read this only if stuck
Read Mozilla's connection identity explanation. Browser interfaces change; use its interpretation of connection state, not a fixed screenshot as the assessment.
