Study Systems: Worked Examples

Work through each trace before reading the explanation. Then solve the transfer task without the page open.

How this page fits

Use this page for targeted reinforcement after the required route. It does not add another completion gate or tracker. Day counts and identity-language examples are optional planning ideas; current completion depends on SS1–SS3 in assessment, actual observations and a feasible review/recovery decision. No daily streak or immediate restart is required.

Example 1: Familiarity is not retrieval

A learner rereads binary search three times but cannot decide the next day between lo = mid and lo = mid + 1. Another reread may increase familiarity without exposing this gap.

Close the source, state the candidate-interval invariant, and trace a two-element array. If the interval does not shrink, the loop cannot progress. Record the failed step, revisit that paragraph, and solve a changed case tomorrow. The evidence is a corrected invariant and delayed successful trace.

Example 2: Plan from available time

Five 60-minute sessions provide 300 minutes. Allocate two to instruction, two to practice, and one to retrieval and repair. Adding a 240-minute project on top creates an impossible 540-minute week.

Instead, use the two practice sessions this week and two next week for the project. Record actual duration to improve future estimates. The plan changes when evidence shows the estimate was wrong; missed work is not automatically a motivation failure.

Transfer and self-check

Fit a 90-minute lab and two 30-minute retrieval sessions into a 180-minute week. Check: only 30 minutes remain for instruction or repair.

Evidence to keep

Save your first attempt, corrected reasoning, and transfer result as checkpoint evidence. A matching final answer without an explanation is insufficient. Continue with the guided lab and use the reading guide to repair a specific gap.
