Accounts, Permissions and Updates

What this concept is

An account identifies a user to a service. Authentication checks access; permissions determine what that access can do. A tool may need to read one folder without needing every file, your contacts or your entire account. A recovery route is part of account setup, not an afterthought.

Why it matters here

Developer tools and AI services can request broad access. You should be able to explain why a permission is necessary before granting it and maintain access without exposing secrets in a learning portfolio.

Concrete example

A note-organizing tool proposes access to your whole home folder. Your task involves three public practice notes. A narrower choice is a dedicated folder containing only those copies. If the tool cannot work with that scope, use a manual route rather than granting access merely to complete an exercise.

A fake recovery worksheet says: “Store your recovery codes here and upload a screenshot.” Replace it with a status note such as “Recovery route checked privately; codes stored separately.”

Common confusion / misconception

A strong password does not prevent every attack. An extra authentication factor helps but does not make an unexpected approval request safe. Updates address known problems; installing them does not verify every future download.

How to use it

For an account you control, review available strong authentication and recovery options using the provider's official guidance. Use distinct credentials and a reputable password manager where appropriate. Record only the decision, not the credential. On managed/shared devices, use the administrator's approved route; do not change another person's settings.

Check yourself

What evidence can be shared safely? A redacted explanation of the chosen scope and recovery plan. Screenshots containing tokens, QR setup secrets or recovery codes are not required evidence.

Mini drill or application

For a fictional PDF summarizer requesting microphone, contacts and one document, justify each permission or reject it. Create a private device/account maintenance plan with owner, check interval and recovery route. A simulated managed-device plan must be labeled.

Use NCSC's account and update guidance as a practical checklist. The module assesses justified decisions, not whether you bought a specific product.
