Models, Context and Evidence

What this concept is

An AI model is a learned computational system. A language model generates text from its input and learned patterns. A chat product may combine that model with search, files, memory or tools. These capabilities depend on the product and settings; fluent wording does not establish that a source was opened or an action happened.

Why it matters here

You can use AI to practice explanations before you can program. You still need a model of what the assistant can observe and which claims require outside evidence.

Concrete example

An assistant says, “I checked your calendar and scheduled Tuesday.” If you supplied only a written availability note and no calendar access, the response supplies neither evidence of a calendar check nor a saved event. It may be a proposed plan mislabeled as an action.

Compare three statements: “Your note says Tuesday is free” (can be checked against the note), “Tuesday is free in your calendar” (requires authorized access and an observation), and “I booked Tuesday” (requires action evidence).

Common confusion / misconception

Training is not the same as retrieving a current source during your session. A citation-looking string may be invented or irrelevant. A request to “be accurate” cannot guarantee truth. Tool access is not an obligation to use every tool.

How to use it

State what information is available, what is missing and what the assistant may do. Ask it to separate supplied facts, inferences and suggestions. Verify important claims independently and inspect action results. Avoid assuming every chat remembers previous sessions.

Check yourself

Why is “the assistant sounded certain” weak evidence? Confidence in wording is not an independent check. A supplied passage or actual tool result can support a specific claim, subject to its own limitations.

Mini drill or application

Classify five statements about a study plan as supplied fact, inference, proposed action or claimed completed action. Add the evidence each would need. Work entirely from the authored fixtures in the guided lab if you have no account.
