Resources and Evidence Limits

Free first route

  • Cornell: 3 P’s for Effective Reading. Use purpose, preview and planning to approach an unfamiliar passage; the local lesson adds an independent explanation and example.

  • Brodsky et al., 2021: lateral-reading instruction. Read the abstract and distinguish the intervention, comparison and outcome. This college-civics study supports teaching source investigation; it does not certify your future technical judgments.

  • Calling Bullshit: Data Reasoning in a Digital World. Carl Bergstrom and Jevin West's course site offers examples for investigating quantitative claims. Select one relevant case after attempting the local numerical exercise. The provocative title is not a model for speaking disrespectfully to others.

Optional depth

  • The Craft of Research, fifth edition, Wayne C. Booth, Gregory G. Colomb, Joseph M. Williams, Joseph Bizup and William T. FitzGerald. Consult sections on questions, claims and evidence in a legal copy. A complete research paper or full-book reading is not required here.

Keep source notes short and attributable. The local numerical examples are invented for practice. Sources checked 2026-10-27; assessment thresholds and exact assignments are curriculum decisions, not experimentally validated scoring instruments.
