Use a Tutor Without Outsourcing Learning

What this concept is

A tutor can select examples, ask questions and give feedback. Learning still requires you to produce explanations and solve new cases. Assistance is useful when it changes what you can do later without that assistance.

Why it matters here

AI can make it easy to finish an exercise without acquiring the intended skill. You need a workflow that preserves your attempts and tests independent understanding.

Concrete example

For a loop task, first predict the result and trace two iterations. Ask the assistant for one hint about the first mismatch, not the complete solution. After applying the hint, explain the repair in your own words. Close the conversation and solve a changed input or requirement. Record which step was assisted.

If the assistant gives a full solution anyway, do not label a copied version independent. Use it as a worked example, then select a fresh variant. A useful tutor may also be wrong; compare its feedback with the task's answer criteria.

Common confusion / misconception

More generated practice is not necessarily better practice. Questions can be ambiguous, too easy or have incorrect answer keys. Learning-style labels and motivational praise are not evidence you understand the material. A long explanation can conceal a missing example.

How to use it

Use a cycle: independent attempt, one focused hint, revision, verification and later unassisted transfer. Ask the tutor to quiz one concept at a time and wait for your answer. Verify its calibration against a trusted source or a hand trace. Reuse the Learning and Calibration module's record rather than creating a separate AI study tracker.

Check yourself

If you can explain the supplied solution but cannot change its condition, what is missing? Transfer evidence. Ask for a smaller changed task and attempt it independently.

Mini drill or application

Use either an existing assistant or the lab's authored response examples. Preserve a first attempt, a hint, a revision and a fresh unassisted result. Label offline simulation separately from live use; both can teach the workflow.
