Bridge to Semester 01: Read Mathematical Notation

Complete this bridge after the programming module and Launchpad algebra repair, before Semester 01. Allow 2–3 additional focused hours for the lesson, practice and gate; this provisional estimate needs a learner pilot. This teaches how to read notation, not how to prove every claim. Formal proof techniques belong in Semester 01.

Names and equality

In mathematics, x = 4 states equality. In Python, x = 4 assigns a value and x == 4 compares. A mathematical equation is not an instruction to update the left side. Write a sentence in ordinary language before translating a formula into code.

Functions and domains

f: N → N describes a function from natural-number inputs to natural-number outputs. Authors differ on whether natural numbers include zero, so check the stated convention. In this bridge, N = {0, 1, 2, ...}. For f(n) = 2n + 1, f(3) = 7. The function is the rule; f(3) is one output. A formula and its allowed input domain together describe what you may substitute.

For an array of length n using zero-based indexing, valid integer indexes satisfy 0 ≤ i < n. If n = 3, indexes 0, 1 and 2 are valid; 3 is not. If n = 0, there are no valid indexes. This connects inequalities to the boundary errors you test in programs.

Sets, membership and tuples

A set records membership without order or repeated copies. For S = {2, 4, 6}, the statement 4 ∈ S is true and 5 ∈ S is false. A ⊆ B says every member of A is also a member of B. |S| is the number of members, here 3. A tuple is ordered: (2, 4) and (4, 2) are different tuples.

A session history [20, 20] has two entries. Converting it into the set {20} loses that distinction. Mathematical notation should match the meaning of the data, not just be shorter to write.

Summation as a loop

Read Σ(i = 1 to 4) i as “add i for each integer from 1 through 4.” It equals 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10. The index is local to the sum; another letter could play the same role. A Python version is:

total = 0
for i in range(1, 5):
total += i
assert total == 10

The mathematical upper limit is included; Python's range stop is excluded. For an empty sum we use 0, matching a loop with no iterations. A power such as 2^4 means repeated multiplication in mathematics; write 2 ** 4 in Python, not 2 ^ 4.

Quantifiers and counterexamples

∀ means “for every” and ∃ means “there exists.” The claim “every session lasts at most 60 minutes” fails if even one session lasts 75 minutes. A counterexample refutes a universal claim. Finding one 30-minute session only establishes that such a session exists; it does not establish that every session has that duration.

“For every learner there exists a suitable study time” allows different times for different learners. “There exists one time suitable for every learner” is a stronger claim. Order matters. This is preparation for reasoning about specifications, not just symbol memorization.

Translate before solving

For each expression, write a plain-language statement, list valid inputs and test a boundary example. If a symbol is undefined, look for the author's notation conventions instead of guessing.

Attempt the practice and exit gate, then compare with the key. The next teaching sequence is Proofs and Discrete Structures. That module supplies the source-backed formal development of these ideas.
