Bridge Review: Semester 4 Systems Programming -> Operating Systems and Networking -> Semester 6 Databases and Distributed Systems

Required Output Classification

Required outputClassificationPublic/private guidance
Incoming-dependency notes and bridge self-checksPractice artifactKeep as working notes unless rewritten into a reusable study guide.
Integration task response and forward-bridge planCheckpoint evidenceStore as private readiness evidence that shows why you are prepared for the next semester.
Any refined diagram, ADR, runbook excerpt, benchmark summary, or capstone thread pulled from the bridge reviewPortfolio candidatePolish and sanitize before publishing; keep raw bridge reasoning private if it exposes weak areas or coursework-only context.

This review connects the current semester to the roadmap around it. Complete it after the cumulative review and before starting the next semester.

Incoming Dependencies

From Semester 4 Systems Programming, identify the skills that were required for this semester. For each one, write one example of where it appeared in real work.

Current Semester Spine

The ideas that should now be active:

  • concurrency
  • protocol reasoning
  • failure handling
  • observability signals

For each item, write:

  1. one definition in your own words
  2. one example from this semester's artifact
  3. one mistake or edge case that clarified the idea

Forward Bridge

Before entering Semester 6 Databases and Distributed Systems, answer:

  • What will the next semester assume you can do without warm-up?
  • Which current artifact can become input for the next semester?
  • Which weak area would create the most friction if ignored?
  • What spaced-repetition cards or drills should stay active for four more weeks?

Integration Task

Write a one-page memo titled How OS and Networking changes the way I approach Semester 6 Databases and Distributed Systems.

The memo must include:

  • one concept carried forward
  • one concrete artifact link or path
  • one tradeoff you understand better now
  • one question you expect the next semester to answer

Scheduling-contract evidence

Require every PS1–PS6 gate at level 2 or above. Reuse the simulator packet: event-order predictions, independent metrics, queue-policy fault evidence and a bounded quantum/cost comparison. A simulator result does not establish host scheduler behavior. Failed gates remain incomplete regardless of aggregate score. See the reconciled workload and progression contract.

Translation-contract evidence

Require every VM1–VM6 gate at level 2 or above. Reuse address traces, permission/fault cases, ASID separation, remap/invalidation tests and counter reconciliation. A TLB hit does not guarantee authorized access, and a miss does not imply storage I/O. Failed gates remain incomplete regardless of aggregate score.

Queue-concurrency evidence

Require every CQ1–CQ6 gate at level 2 or above. Reuse protected-state reasoning, controlled wait/close traces, fault/repair evidence and the independent shutdown case. Sequential model histories and sampled thread tests do not prove every interleaving or fairness. Failed gates remain incomplete regardless of aggregate score.

Crash-recovery evidence

Require every FS1–FS6 gate at level 2 or above. Reuse the crash matrix, persisted-prefix cases, early-success counterexample and repeatable replay evidence. Model results do not certify real device durability. Failed gates remain incomplete regardless of aggregate score.

Stream-framing evidence

Require every NW1–NW6 gate at level 2 or above. Reuse fragmentation/EOF traces, early size rejection, terminal-error policy, simulated deadlines and the bounded socket-adapter design. Decoder tests do not establish real network timing or exactly-once business effects. Failed gates remain incomplete regardless of aggregate score.

Semester completion contract

Use the 468–676-hour workload and progression contract and the five separately scored security-strand categories S1–S5. All 34 module gates (including PC1–PC4) and all five strand categories must reach level 2; aggregate marks cannot replace missing evidence. Reuse artifacts and record time once. Independent review and workload pilots remain pending.
